HOW TO DEAL WITH ANXIETY?

Hello everyone!

Feeling anxious at times can be normal. When we are stressed out about some particular situation and are concerned about the future consequences that we have to go through, we start feeling nervous, scared and shaky on our feet.

Though it is normal to feel so in some important situations of our life but many of us deal with this feeling on a regular basis. If you are too one of us, you should not take it lightly because it can get severe with time and maybe it is better to check with a therapist.

Anxiety can be of many types:

  • Phobia– Few people are scared of some particular object or thing and when they come to a situation where they have to deal with it, they start to panic.
  • Panic disorder– At times people start to panic at unexpected situations and it happens without any pattern and may occur regularly.
  • Separation anxiety– Going away from family, home or a loved one can also cause anxiety issues.
  • Illness anxiety– Fear of getting sick and facing the pain can cause this feeling.
  • Social anxiety– A lot of people donโ€™t like to be in crowded places or interacting with a group of people and they may have this kind of anxiety.
  • OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder )– Though OCD is kind of a trait which is part of personality but they tend to follow some particular habit and making them come out of their comfort zone may cause anxiety in them.
  • PTST (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder)– At times when someone goes through a difficult and painful experience, it leaves a deeper impact on them which keeps them on a constant loop of stress. They might have severe kinds of anxiety and should consult a doctor as soon as possible.

Symptoms:

  • Feeling restless and sweaty.
  • Having sudden difficulty in breathing.
  • May feel nauseated and black out for some time.
  • Facing trouble in sleeping.
  • Stammering and having speech problems at unexpected situations.
  • Higher fluctuation in heart rate.
  • Trouble in concentrating on a particular task.
  • Having tremors and feeling weak.

Ways to deal with anxiety:

  • Try taking a slow and deep breath.
  • Use essential oils like lavender oil, sandalwood oil or peppermint oil. It is said that those oils have a calming effect on the brain.
  • Journaling- writing down your deepest thoughts helps you in recognizing them and to remove those painful memories or thoughts from your subconscious mind.
  • Try talking to a close and trusted person who can be supportive about your feelings.
  • Try to recognize what is triggering anxiety in you.
  • Practicing meditation and yoga helps you to avoid anxiety on a long run.
  • If it is happening on a regular basis then consult a doctor immediately.
  • When you start to feel anxious, try watching some comedy videos, it helps you relax sooner.
  • Find a hobby which you find very soothing and include it in your daily routine.
  • Know that you cannot control everything that is happening around you and learn to let it go from time to time.
  • Limit caffeine and alcohol consumption as much as you can.
  • Maintain your sleeping routine and try resting as much as you can.
  • Join a support group and meet other people with the same issue.
  • Try getting out of your comfort-zone from time to time by taking small baby steps, it will boost-up your confidence.
  • Try practicing gratitude and positive affirmations.

When you start focusing on the good things in your life, slowly all the worries start to vanish and you reach a state of calmness. Always know that you are not alone in this and there is no reason to be embarrassed about having this feeling. Even most successful people in the world have panic attacks and anxiety in some situations.

  1. In my own life, I have found it far from easy to cope with anxiety and believe that it is endogenous. In my case. While all that you say is helpful and I have employed most if not all of these methods, I believe that for some of us physiological remedies are necessary. And these do not yet exist.

    1. Hello Anthony,

      If anxiety becomes severe with time, it is better to consult doctor and see a therepist. These tips are helpful in early stages of this disorder. I hope you some how it was helpful.

      1. Sadly doctors and therapists have no answer. In time I have every confidence we will be able to cure such disorders. That time has not yet come which leaves us with the sort of ameliorating remedies you so thoughtfully describe.

  2. The post is informative and very helpful. The quote at the begining on anxiety being the desire to control than just to think about the future has created a shift in my mind on the same. I was So convinced it’s only the thoughts that created anxiety. Thanks for the post

    Our fear doesn’t just come from thinking about the future, from wanting to control it.

    The future is the reality, only the premonition, in a conjecture and assertion a possibility.

    Fear is anchored in all cratures, wanting to protect them in their subjective moment, an event, from harm, from danger.

    Fear, whether or not with a real reference, cannot be explained as just a finding of illness.

    Thinking better, that’s one thing. To judge myself and others, without feeling, without empathy for one other, the other.

    What one regards as the normality of fear, the effects of an act, whether with or without being on shaky feet, is often only consciously realized afterwards.

    I don’t need soul care for my panic attacks and fear. I’ve been walking hand in hand with my bad side of feelings since I was a kid.

    Every day I experience the discovery of what is dear to me and what is right for me. My delusions are also fed from the subconscious, its anchored patterns.

    I like the accumulation of a crowd, fear helps me not to fit in there because something unspoken comes towards me that doesn’t serve me.

    The stress “literally” tells me it’s enough.

    Of course, suggestions to prevent the overwhelming feeling of fear are enjoyable.
    I know that I am not the master of my own house, which is why I sometimes have to endure the almost unbearable situation and the collapse of a mood.

    Of course I keep a diary in my heart. The memories of my bad behavior cannot be erased in the soul. I want to endure them when they appear, because no other person, or any other god, can relieve them from my shoulder and from me.

    My life, in its whole way, is my occupation, I don’t want to get lost in the dust of my destiny, to tinker with something better.

    The happenings out there, not everything is in my hand. I am not allowed to trust myself, I have to be on the lookout for myself, not for others.

    I don’t want to let go of anything, I don’t want to keep anything, I am nothing special that someone else should point the way, than to go my own way with myself, alone.

    Thinking well may be a way, the better is probably beyond my senses, my reality and my will. The humility to be allowed to be there is enough for me.

    I don’t put my hand in the wound of someone who takes all worries away from me and promises a state of peace and order.

    I know in the midst of everything I am alone with myself. Others may overcome their fear, I want to go with them to my end, because without my fear, I would no longer be like that for a long time.

    1. Hello Hans,

      I understand your emotions.
      obviously we don’t want to lose our memories whether it is sad, painful or happy. But dealing with them in a healthy way is necessary.
      I hope you find a way to do so. And it’s a good thing to be confident and strong with one’s bad side as well.

        I understand that you recommend a healthy approach to my emotional world in relation to my attitude and worldview.

        I go my way without any claim to happiness or bliss.

        I have no higher self, I do not have any confidence in an inflated self, my very little, my consciousness, the world my insignificant, my little “I”.

        My shadow walks next to me, I think my subconscious “goes” around with me, inside me.

        I don’t need to be lucky, my life is a gift to me.

        To you, dear Mrs. Pratha, it should come true how you want to make your world, that of others, better with your hope.

  4. Great post, Pratha! There’s this process called grounding which I use to help myself calm down – picking up an object near me and touching it or trying to listen to the sounds near me and identifying 3-4 different sounds. But love your suggestions too!

  5. I think this was a very informative post filled with lots of tips, including getting help when needed. There is so much anxiety right now, made even worse by the actions in Washington this week. For me, I write and I bake bread. And sometimes write about baking bread!

  6. Thank you for writing and sharing this article. I suffer from PTSD, due to my years working as a Correctional Officer. The environment was extremley toxic, with violence, death, and trauma a constant and real threat. I have learned many ways to cope with professional counselling and family/friend support, but it has been a tough road.
